Cookies

What we store in your browser, and why. Effective 3 September 2026.

Analytics cookies

Our first analytics tool (Vercel Web Analytics) works without cookies and without identifying you. We also use Google Analytics 4, and how it starts depends on where you are connecting from:

  • EU/EEA, United Kingdom, Switzerland— we ask first. Until you press “Accept” on the cookie notice, the Google script is not loaded at all: no cookies, no pings. Declining keeps it that way.
  • Everywhere else— Google Analytics loads automatically. You can switch it off at any time with “Cookie settings” in the footer, which also deletes its cookies.

To know which applies, our host tells the site the country your connection comes from, and we keep that answer (just “eu” or “other”) in a small cookie called ea-region for seven days. Your own choice is stored in your browser for twelve months.

When accepted, Google Analytics sets the _ga and _ga_* cookies, which last up to two years and let Google tell one visit from the next. We use it to see which pages, regions and spots are useful and where visitors come from. Nothing is used for advertising or shared with advertisers.

Change your choice any time with “Cookie settings” in the footer of every page.

What your browser may store anyway

  • Map tiles. The interactive map (Mapbox GL) caches tiles and fonts in your browser’s storage so the map loads faster next time. This is performance data, not tracking.
  • Map filters. Your wind and wave filter choices live in the page address, not in storage, so a filtered map can be shared as a link.
  • Preview environments. Non-public preview versions of the site are protected by Vercel and set an authentication cookie for people who sign in to review them. The public site does not.

Clearing it

You can clear site data at any time from your browser’s settings. The site keeps working; the map will simply re-download its tiles.

Questions

Ask us anything about this through the contact page. If we ever add further cookies — for accounts or saved preferences, say — this page will change first.
