Guanacaste's most established surf town offers a wide bay with Papagayo offshores and a protected estuary mouth — reliable dry-season eFoil conditions.
Tamarindo Bay is the natural eFoil window into Costa Rica's Pacific north. The bay faces west between Punta San Francisco to the south and the mouth of the Rio Matapalo to the north, giving a 2km-wide arc of beach with the offshore Papagayo wind pattern dominating from December through April. Those northeasterlies blow 15-25 knots, smooth the bay's surface, and leave clean conditions for foil progression on the inside while Pacific groundswell continues to break on the outside sandbar at Pico Pequeno. The town is a developed surf hub — operators, accommodation and battery support are easy. The Tamarindo Estuary at the north end of the beach is protected wildlife habitat (Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas, leatherback turtle nesting Oct-Feb), so launches should stay south of the river mouth and well clear of the estuary's brown-water plume. Costa Rican coastal recreation does not require federal permits for personal eFoils, but commercial operators work under MINAE (Ministerio de Ambiente) rules for the protected zones.
