Sanur sits on Bali's east coast inside a long fringing reef that runs roughly from Pantai Matahari Terbit south past Mertasari, creating a 4-kilometer protected lagoon that is the single most forgiving piece of water on the island for foiling. Mornings are typically glass until the southeast trade fills in around 11am, and inside-reef depth holds at 1.5 to 3 meters over sand and seagrass — deep enough to fly a 75cm mast cleanly, shallow enough to walk back if the battery dies. Launch from the southern end at Mertasari Beach where the sand is wide and the jukung outrigger fleet keeps to a clear lane south of the swimming buoys. The operating window is essentially year-round, but conditions split sharply by monsoon. April through October (the dry season, with the SE trade dominant) gives the cleanest mornings; November through March brings the northwest monsoon, which pushes squalls and brown river outflow from the Tukad Ayung in the north — Sanur's east-facing aspect keeps it more protected than Seminyak in the wet season but visibility drops. Avoid the reef line on a falling tide; the inside-reef channel near Pantai Karang gets thin, and the coral heads off Mertasari are sharp. Local sea wasp (Chironex) presence is rare but documented after heavy rains. Respect the Hindu purification rituals at Pantai Padanggalak and the temple offerings (canang sari) along the high-water line — these are working ceremonial spaces, not photo backdrops. Keep motorized launches south of Mertasari and well clear of the morning fishing canoes hauling out at Pantai Sindhu. Two operators run guided eFoil sessions out of the Mertasari end; both require a basic swim test and brief you on the reef pass locations before letting you fly outside.
