Belle Mare Lagoon

Belle Mare runs for several kilometers along the eastern edge of Mauritius and offers a quieter, more spread-out alternative to the kite circus at Le Morne. The lagoon is wide — often 1 km from beach to reef — with white-sand bottom and predictable side-onshore SE trade wind from May through October. The water is consistently shallow enough to stand in for most of the launch zones (Belle Mare Plage, Palmar, and Poste Lafayette), and there's significantly less kite traffic than the southwest, which makes the lagoon a comfortable working space for eFoil training and progression. The Mauritian Integrated Coastal Zone Management framework regulates motorized craft inside the lagoon — commercial operators need a Tourism Authority pleasure-craft licence, and several resort-based water sports centers along the Belle Mare strip handle eFoil rentals. Independent visitors should launch from public beach access points (Palmar Public Beach is the most straightforward) and stay clear of marked swimming zones in front of the resorts. Outside the reef there are occasional bull shark sightings on the eastern drop-off, but inside the lagoon the eFoil zone is functionally shark-free — coral heads near the reef edge are the more relevant hazard.
