Tarifa sits at the confluence of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, where reliable thermal winds funnel through the Strait of Gibraltar from late May through September. Levante (easterly) winds dominate summer mornings — typically 15–25 knots, building through midday — while the lighter Poniente (westerly) creates clean conditions on calmer days. The town has been a kitesurfing capital for two decades, which means eFoil-friendly infrastructure is mature: rentals, schools, and beach access are well-established along the Playa de los Lances and Playa Valdevaqueros stretches. The protected lagoon at the southern end of Los Lances offers genuinely flat water and is the standard first-timer location — sandy bottom, easy walk-in launch, no rocks. Open ocean conditions a kilometer offshore are intermediate-to-advanced territory, particularly in afternoon Levante when chop builds quickly and currents through the strait demand respect. Avoid the central beach area between the kite schools during peak afternoon hours — it gets crowded with kitesurfers and right-of-way conflicts emerge. Best months: May–September for thermal reliability, October for emptier conditions but reduced wind consistency. December–February sees Atlantic swells and weather systems that produce world-class wave conditions but unpredictable sessions. Note the strait's shipping lanes a few kilometers offshore — stay well inshore of the cargo traffic.
