Pre-Alpine lake with a steady afternoon thermal in its northern arm — quieter than Garda, almost as reliable.
Lake Como is the deepest lake in Italy and the third-largest, an inverted-Y of glacial water hemmed in by mountains rising directly from the shore. Most of the lake is too narrow and too sheltered for consistent wind, but the northern arm — the stretch from Gera Lario down through Domaso, Gravedona and Dongo — opens into a broader basin where afternoon thermals build reliably from spring through autumn. The dominant wind here is the Breva, a southerly that fills in by late morning and runs at 8–18 knots until early evening. The Tivano, a katabatic northerly, blows from dawn until mid-morning and rewards early risers with glass-flat water. Domaso is the canonical launch: a long pebble-and-grass lakefront with windsurf clubs, several rental operations, and easy boat-ramp access. Water depth drops off quickly, the basin is wide enough to run long reaches without re-rounding, and powerboat traffic is more contained than on Garda thanks to a 20 kt blanket speed limit. The lake's water is cold and exceptionally clear; a 3/2 wetsuit is comfortable from May through September, and air temperatures stay 2–4 °C cooler than the Po plain even in August. Compared to Garda, Como trades raw consistency for a quieter scene. The eFoil-specific infrastructure is thinner — fewer dedicated rentals, more general watersports clubs that can adapt — but the pre-Alpine setting is among the most photogenic in Europe and the northern basin has enough room for serious sessions when the Breva is on. Italian inland-water rules apply; ride well clear of swimming areas marked by yellow buoys.
