Italy's largest lake — Alpine-walled, thermally driven, and the most consistent inland foiling water in Europe.

About this spot

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, carved by glaciers between the Dolomites and the Po Plain, and it has been the spiritual home of European wind sports for half a century. The northern basin around Torbole and Riva del Garda funnels two predictable thermal winds: the Pelèr, a cold northerly that descends from the Sarca Valley in the early morning, and the Ora, a warm southerly that fills in around late morning and blows steadily through the afternoon. The cycle is so reliable that local sailing schools build their day around it — Pelèr sessions before breakfast, Ora sessions after lunch. For eFoil riders this is rare territory: glassy water at dawn, then a thermal that's strong enough to feel alive but rarely brutal. The lake is deep, the bottom drops away quickly from the launch beaches at Torbole and the Riva del Garda lungolago, and the water stays cold enough year-round (around 10 °C in winter, 23 °C in August) to require a wetsuit outside high summer. The southern basin near Sirmione and Desenzano is wider and gentler, better suited to learners or anyone wary of mid-afternoon Ora gusts in the bottleneck up north. Infrastructure is mature — windsurf and wing rentals line the lakefront, several outfits now stock eFoils, and the towns of Torbole and Riva are walkable with cafes, mechanics, and bus links to Verona airport. Boat traffic is moderate and a 10 kt limit applies near shore, so most foiling happens within a few hundred metres of the bank. The Italian inland-waters rules and lake-specific concessions apply; check the local Capitaneria notices in summer.

Typical conditions

Pelèr northerly mornings (10–20 kt) and Ora southerly afternoons (12–22 kt); flat to moderate chop; reliable thermal cycle Apr–Sep.
