Amsterdam's eastern lake district gives reliable wind, flat freshwater, and verified Fliteboard schools operating from IJburg and Diemerpark.
The IJmeer is the southern part of the larger IJsselmeer/Markermeer freshwater lake system, separated from Amsterdam city centre by the IJburg residential islands. Water is fresh, 3-5 m deep over sand and clay, with no tide and very little swell — only short wind chop from the long northwesterly fetch across the Markermeer. Reliable westerlies make this one of the most consistent foiling venues in continental Europe, and several verified Fliteboard and Lift partner schools run sessions from the IJburg beach (Blijburg) and Diemerpark. Dutch waterway authority Rijkswaterstaat regulates the area and requires registration for any motorised watercraft over 13 m or above 20 km/h — eFoils fall under the latter and operators register accordingly. Speed limits inside the marked swim zones at Blijburg and Strand IJburg are 6 km/h. Watch for the dense recreational sailing fleet on summer weekends and the Amsterdam-Almere ferry route along the south shore. Water reaches 19-22 C in July, and the season runs from May through September.
