About this spot

Waitemata Harbour is the working heart of the City of Sails — a 70 square-kilometre estuary stretching from the Hauraki Gulf islands inland to the Whau River. The harbour earned its nickname honestly: it sees a textbook westerly sea breeze by late morning almost every summer day, and the geography of Rangitoto Island and the North Shore creates an obstacle course of flat-water lees and open chop sections that make it one of the most varied foiling waters in New Zealand. Launch from Mission Bay or St Heliers on the eastern bays for protected morning glass-off conditions and views back to the CBD. Devonport, Takapuna, and Narrow Neck on the North Shore offer northerly-protected coves. For more advanced riders, Westhaven and Herne Bay put you under the Harbour Bridge with strong tidal flow — the ebb runs 2-3 knots and creates standing wakes off the bridge piers worth surfing if you know what you're doing. Browns Island (Motukorea) is a 2km hop from Mission Bay and a popular target on flat days. Auckland Council's Navigation Safety Bylaw is the rulebook here, enforced by Auckland Harbourmaster. The 5-knot rule applies within 200m of shore, within 50m of vessels or swimmers, and inside all marked swimming areas (Mission Bay, Takapuna, Cheltenham). The commercial shipping channel through the Rangitoto Channel is off-limits to powered craft including eFoils — stay south of the Bean Rock leading line. Ferries run constantly between downtown, Devonport, and Waiheke; cross their wake at right angles and yield in narrow passages.

Typical conditions
