Wellington (Evans Bay)

Wellington's most foilable corner, a flat-water bay shielded from the southerly that flattens the rest of the harbour, with a marina launch and city-skyline views.

About this spot

Evans Bay is the practical answer to foiling in Wellington — a 2km-long inlet on the western side of the Miramar Peninsula that sits in the wind shadow of Mt Crawford and Roseneath when the city's notorious southerly howls through Cook Strait. While Oriental Bay and Lyall Bay get blown out, Evans Bay holds glassy enough water to ride for an hour either side of the wind shift. The Evans Bay Marina at the southern end is the natural launch — there's a public ramp adjacent and parking along Cobham Drive. The bay is no secret to local windfoil and wing crews who use it as their default training spot, but eFoil traffic is light. Conditions favour intermediate riders: the bay is sheltered, but Wellington's wind is rarely truly absent, and even a 10-knot northerly will build short-period chop across the 1.5km fetch from Greta Point. Maritime NZ rules apply via the Greater Wellington Regional Council bylaw — 5 knots within 200m of shore, no foiling within the marked swimming area at the southern beach. The airport approach passes overhead but doesn't restrict watercraft. Avoid the Te Motu Kairangi marine reserve boundary at the bay's northern entrance and give the rowing crews from Wellington Rowing Club their lane on weekday mornings.

Typical conditions

Sheltered inner-harbour bay tucked behind Miramar Peninsula with morning calm and afternoon northerly fill. Wind-protected from the city's signature southerlies but exposed to gusty NW above 25 knots.
