Charleston Harbor

About this spot

Charleston Harbor is where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet the Atlantic, framed by the peninsula's church-spire skyline and Fort Sumter sitting in the middle of the entrance channel. Launch from the James Island County Park ramp or Brittlebank Park on the Ashley side, or from Mount Pleasant's Shem Creek across the harbor. The harbor is roughly 4 miles across and provides dozens of foilable lines — out to Fort Sumter, up the Cooper toward the Ravenel Bridge, or south into Charleston Harbor itself. Tidal flow is the defining feature. The harbor sees a 5-6ft tidal range and current rips at 2-3 knots through the narrow points, particularly Castle Pinckney and the Ravenel Bridge piers. Plan around slack water if you want flat conditions, or use the flow to extend a downwind run. Summer afternoons bring reliable SW sea breezes by 1pm; spring and fall offer the cleanest conditions before storms and tropical activity. The major caution is commercial shipping — Charleston is a top-10 US container port and the marked shipping channel through the harbor sees several large vessels daily. Stay outside the channel buoys, and never cross in front of a moving ship. South Carolina DNR and USCG share jurisdiction; standard rules apply (100ft from swimmers, no-wake within 50ft of moored vessels, life jackets required). Avoid Patriots Point during cruise ship operations.

Typical conditions

Tidal harbor at the confluence of Ashley and Cooper rivers with strong 1-3 knot tidal flow, afternoon SW sea breezes 10-15 knots in summer, and warm 70-85F water April-October.
