Lake Travis is a 64-mile-long Highland Lakes reservoir on the Colorado River northwest of Austin, carved through Texas Hill Country limestone. The water is unusually deep and clear for a Texas lake — over 200 feet at the dam — and warms quickly through the long Texas summer, holding above 80 °F from June through September. Wind on Travis is generally light. Most foiling here happens at dawn or in the evening when the lake glasses over and boat traffic dies down. A south-southeast thermal often fills in for a few hours mid-afternoon in summer, rarely exceeding 12–15 knots. Popular launches include Mansfield Dam Park, Hippie Hollow, Pace Bend, and the Volente area, with multiple eFoil rental and demo operations based around the lake. Weekend powerboat traffic gets heavy in summer; aim for weekday mornings or after 6 PM. Travis levels fluctuate dramatically with Texas drought cycles — coves that exist in wet years can be exposed limestone in dry ones. Summer thunderstorms build fast over the Hill Country in late afternoon.
