About this spot

Lake Burley Griffin is the artificial centrepiece of Canberra, a 6.6 km-long ornamental lake created in 1963 by damming the Molonglo River. Its three basins — West, Central and East — provide consistently flat freshwater across roughly 6.6 square kilometres, surrounded by parkland, the Australian National University, Parliament House and the National Gallery. For ACT residents and Canberra visitors, it's the most accessible foilable water within the territory. Winds are variable rather than thermal-driven, ranging 5–15 kt on typical days, with stronger gusts arriving on cold-front passages. Summer water temperatures reach 20–22 °C, but winter drops to 8–12 °C and a wetsuit is essential year-round. The lake is also a popular venue for rowing, sailing and dragon boating — the National Capital Authority manages the lake and powered-vessel rules apply, with restrictions in some basins and around bridges. The lake's central position, easy ramp access at Yarralumla and Black Mountain Peninsula, and absence of swell make it well-suited for skill-building. Daylight-only operation applies under ACT and NCA rules.
