About this spot

Byron Bay sits at the easternmost tip of mainland Australia, where the East Australian Current pushes warm water past Cape Byron and a series of crescent bays sheltered from the prevailing southerly swell. Wategos Beach and the Pass tuck in behind the headland, offering glassy mornings ideal for foiling before the NE trade wind builds across the afternoon. Water temps stay between 21–26 °C year-round, and dolphins, turtles and humpbacks (June–November) are regular company. The bay's curve creates distinct microclimates: Main Beach and Belongil are exposed to wind chop once the seabreeze arrives, while Wategos and Little Wategos remain protected. Strong currents wrap around the cape — intermediate riders only outside the inner bay. Byron is part of the Cape Byron Marine Park, so check zoning for any sanctuary areas before launching. The town has decades of established surf and watersports infrastructure — board hire, lessons and beach access are straightforward. Daylight-only operation applies under NSW rules, and eFoils require local council compliance for powered vessel operation near swimmers.

Typical conditions

Subtropical NE trades 10–18 kt summer; SE swells year-round; warm 21–26 °C water; calmer mornings before sea breeze fills in afternoon.
