About this spot

Mooloolaba Bay curves around the headland north of Point Cartwright, creating one of southeast Queensland's most beginner-friendly foil spots. The bay faces north so it's protected from the dominant SE swell and trades — when Caloundra and Maroochydore are blown out, Mooloolaba often holds clean conditions. The patrolled main beach has a permanent swimmer-free zone you must avoid, but launching from the eastern end near the breakwater puts you straight into deep-enough water to start a board. The Mooloolah River estuary just south is the alternative on windier days — flat, sheltered, and tidal. Use the Parkyn Parade public ramp. Maritime Safety Queensland's 6-knot zone covers the river mouth and inside the Wharf precinct, so you'll be slow-cruising through the marina but can lift and ride once past the rock wall. Year-round water temps and consistent morning calm make it suitable for absolute beginners; afternoons in December-February see 12-18 knot NE seabreezes that develop short-period chop but rarely full whitecaps inside the bay's protection. Watch for the constant trawler and dive-charter traffic in and out of the harbour entrance.

Typical conditions

Sheltered north-facing bay with reliable morning glass-off and afternoon NE sea breezes 10-15 knots in summer. Water 20-26 C; small wind chop inside the bay even on bigger SE swells.
