About this spot

Rio rewards riders who plan around its two distinct water bodies. Inside Baia de Guanabara — launched from Praia de Botafogo or the Urca cove — Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf) blocks easterly wind and swell, leaving a long protected fetch toward the Niteroi bridge that stays clean through most summer afternoons. Outside the bay, Barra da Tijuca's 18km of open Atlantic beach gives consistent 1-2m swell and reliable SE thermals; Praia do Pepe is the established kite/wing zone and a sensible eFoil launch with parking and operator presence. Brazilian Marinha rules apply, and Capitania dos Portos do Rio de Janeiro patrols the bay actively — stick to outside the marked shipping channels and respect the Marina da Gloria's harbor zone.

Typical conditions

Baia de Guanabara offers protected flat water in the lee of Pao de Acucar; Barra da Tijuca and Praia do Pepe face open Atlantic swell. Summer (Dec-Mar) brings 10-15kt SE sea breezes; winter cold fronts deliver cleaner mornings.
