About this spot
Muri Lagoon on Rarotonga's south-east coast is the standard launch for almost every water-sport activity on the island. Four small motu — Taakoka, Koromiri, Oneroa and Motutapu — sit on the barrier reef and break up the SE trade-wind swell, leaving a long sand-bottom shelf inside that rarely tops chest depth. The water is clear, the bottom is forgiving, and the SE trade winds (May-October dry season is the workhorse) blow side-onshore at typically 10-18 kt. The Cook Islands' regulatory framework is light compared with French Polynesia or Fiji, but local councils manage beach access and a handful of watersports operators run lagoon-based rentals; respect any marked snorkel zones and the lagoon-cruise traffic that runs out of Muri Beach in the afternoons.
