Moorea — Opunohu Bay

Moorea is the heart-shaped island visible from Papeete's waterfront, 17 km across the Sea of the Moon and reachable in 30 minutes by passenger ferry. The island has two deep volcanic bays cut into its north coast — Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay — plus a continuous lagoon protected by a barrier reef that runs almost the entire perimeter. Opunohu in particular is the standout for eFoil: the inner reaches of the bay are wind-shadowed by 880 m peaks, the bottom drops gradually, and the water is genuinely flat in the morning before the trades fill in. The lagoon shelf running east toward Tiahura and west toward Hauru Point gives intermediate riders a long, clean cruising line with reef on the outside knocking down ocean swell. SE trade winds set the calendar here too: May-October is the dry-season workhorse with cleaner conditions and lower humidity, while November-April brings warmer water but more squalls and cyclone risk. Several Moorea-based watersports operators run eFoil rentals and lessons out of Hauru and the lagoon side of the Hilton/Sofitel, and DDPMM registration applies as on Bora Bora. The 5-knot inshore zone is enforced more visibly here because of the heavy whale-watching, snorkel-tour and lagoon-cruise traffic in austral winter (July-October) when humpbacks transit through. Give the dolphin and ray observation areas in Opunohu wide berth and watch for the small reef passes on the north coast where outgoing tide can pull harder than expected.
