Bora Bora's lagoon is the postcard the rest of French Polynesia gets compared to. The barrier reef encloses roughly 38 km2 of protected water that rarely exceeds chest depth across vast sand-bottom flats, making the interior of the lagoon some of the most forgiving eFoil terrain in the Pacific. Beginners typically launch from the Matira Point side or from concession beaches on the eastern motu, where the bottom is white sand and the wind shadow from the main island knocks down the chop. Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia rise 727 m and 661 m respectively from the centre of the caldera, and on a clear morning ride the silhouette is the entire reason people fly here. The SE trade winds (mara'amu) dominate from May through October — this is the dry-season workhorse, with steadier 12-18 kt afternoons and morning glass-offs that are the prime eFoil window. The cyclone-risk wet season runs roughly November to April with hotter, wetter, more variable conditions. Intermediate riders look for the zone near Teavanui Pass on the western side, where outgoing tide meets ocean swell and the lagoon edge offers a small bump session, but currents through the pass are real and the pass itself should be left to advanced riders only. Reef coral is shallow in many places — a hard breach onto a coral head will end your board and your day. French Polynesia sits under French jurisdiction, and motorized water craft above 6 hp require registration with the DDPMM (Direction Polynesienne des Affaires Maritimes); most lagoon zones carry a 5-knot inshore speed limit within 300 m of shore that eFoils technically must respect. Several Bora Bora hotels and a small number of independent operators run guided eFoil sessions out of Matira and the Conrad/Four Seasons motu — going through one of them handles the registration, insurance and reef-knowledge piece in one transaction. Respect the marine reserve zones around the coral gardens on the eastern lagoon and stay clear of the manta cleaning station near Anau.
