About this spot

Spaanse Water (Spanish Water) is a roughly 3km-long enclosed lagoon on Curacao's southeast coast, connected to the Caribbean by a narrow channel through Caracasbaai. Surrounded by low hills and accessed via a single navigable cut, the lagoon stays flat regardless of how hard the easterly trades are blowing on the open coast — and on Curacao, those trades blow 15-25 knots most days from December through July. That makes Spanish Water one of the most reliable flat-water venues in the Caribbean: while open-coast spots get blown out, the lagoon stays glassy, just with fresh wind moving across it. The lagoon hosts the island's main sailing scene, several yacht clubs, and an established watersport infrastructure that has expanded into eFoil rentals and instruction over the past few years. Multiple inner bays — Cornelis Bay, Boca Sami, and the larger central basin — offer different launch options depending on wind direction. Avoid the main fairway used by sailing fleets and the entrance channel where current can run with tide. Coral heads come up in a few specific spots near the entrance — local operators know them. Curacao sits south of the main hurricane track at roughly 12 degrees north, giving it among the best year-round reliability of any Caribbean island. Trade winds are strongest December through July and ease somewhat August through November; the trade-off is that August-October is the period when occasional tropical waves can affect the southern Caribbean. In practice, the lagoon rides cleanly nearly every day of the year, with January through April delivering the most consistent combination of warm water, steady trades outside, and flat lagoon surface inside.

Typical conditions

Large enclosed inland lagoon with multiple bays, almost always flat regardless of trade-wind strength outside. Sailing and watersport hub on the island.
