The classic Mamanuca lagoon — clear water, sand bottom, and reef protection — about 45 minutes by ferry from Denarau.
Plantation Island sits on Malolo Lailai in the heart of the Mamanuca group, roughly 45 minutes by catamaran from Denarau. The lagoon between Malolo Lailai, Malolo and the surrounding reef is the calling card here: clear sand-bottom water, generous shallows for board-up and a continuous outer reef that takes the brunt of any ocean swell. Compared with Denarau the water is dramatically clearer (you're well off the Viti Levu river plumes) and the wind quality is better because the trades arrive cleaner from the south-east. The MSAF registration framework applies as elsewhere in Fiji, and the resort-based watersports concessions on Plantation and the neighbouring Musket Cove handle commercial licensing, which makes them the path of least resistance for visiting riders. Reef passes between the islands are the main hazard — outgoing-tide currents through the gaps can run hard and should be respected. The May-October SE trade-wind season is peak; November-April carries cyclone risk and is generally considered shoulder-to-off-season for water sports here.
