Finland's capital sits inside a granite-skerry archipelago with sheltered foiling channels from Suomenlinna out to Pihlajasaari and Vuosaari.
Helsinki is fronted by roughly 330 islands stretching from the central Suomenlinna fortress out to Vuosaari and the eastern Sipoo skerries. The protected zones between Lauttasaari, Pihlajasaari and Suomenlinna stay flat in almost any wind, with brackish Baltic water (salinity around 0.6%) and bottoms of granite and sand at 4-15 m. Eastward, the riding opens up toward Vartiosaari and Vuosaari, with longer fetch but still no meaningful swell inside the inner archipelago. Wind is the main constraint: summer afternoons typically deliver 6-12 knot southwesterly thermals, with mornings often glass-flat. Watch for the Suomenlinna ferry running every 20 minutes in summer, the Tallink/Viking Line and Eckero Line ferries entering Lansisatama and Katajanokka on dense schedules, and the smaller JT-Line water buses crossing between islands. Finnish water-traffic regulations enforce a 6-knot limit within 100 m of bathing beaches and inside marked fairway zones. Finland's everyman's rights (jokamiehenoikeus) cover private eFoil use across the public archipelago, but commercial operators need a permit from the City of Helsinki and Traficom registration for the craft. Most launches are from Lauttasaari, Hernesaari, or the Vuosaari marinas. Peak season runs mid-June to mid-August, with the midnight sun giving 18+ hour usable days at solstice and water warming to 17-19 C by late July.
Light to moderate southwesterlies 6-12 knots most summer afternoons, building from late morning. Flat brackish water inside the inner skerries; very little swell anywhere in the inner Gulf of Finland.
