Sweden's 24,000-island skerry network offers protected channels, glassy mornings, and reliable summer thermals from Vaxholm out to Sandhamn.
The Stockholm Archipelago stretches roughly 60 km east from the city through more than 24,000 islands, islets and skerries, with eFoiling concentrated in the protected middle band between Vaxholm, Grinda and Sandhamn. Mornings are typically glass through 10:00, then a southwesterly sea breeze fills in to 8-14 knots and holds until early evening. Brackish Baltic water sits around 17-20 C in July and August, with low salinity reducing buoyancy slightly compared to North Sea coasts. Bottom is mostly granite skerry and sand at 4-15 m, with deep channels between islands and very little swell inside the Stora Vartan basin or behind Moja. Watch for the high-volume Waxholmsbolaget ferry traffic on the main Vaxholm-Sandhamn route and the Tallink/Viking Line lanes near Stavsnas and Sandhamn — stay clear of the marked fairways and give 200 m to working ferries. Outer skerries from Huvudskar and Uto see more open Baltic chop and benefit from south or southwest winds for protection. Sweden's allmansratten (right of public access) covers private eFoil use across the archipelago, but commercial schools and rentals require operator permits from the local kommun and Transportstyrelsen registration for the craft. Most riders launch from public jetties at Vaxholm, Grinda, or Sandhamn, or from leased dock space at Bullando Marina. Late June through mid-August is peak season for both wind and water temperature, with daylight stretching past 22:00 in midsummer.
Sheltered brackish water with light to moderate southwesterlies June-August; sea breezes typically build by midday and ease at dusk. Negligible swell inside the inner skerries, building toward the outer islands.
