Marstrand sits on a small island roughly 40 km north of Gothenburg and has been Sweden's premier sailing venue for over a century, hosting Match Cup Sweden each July. The narrow sound between Marstrandson and Koon gives a perfectly sheltered flat-water launch in any conditions, while the open Marstrandsfjorden to the west offers cleaner sea-breeze sessions for confident riders. Bottom is granite and kelp at 5-20 m, with the channel deepening quickly off the Carlsten fortress headland. Expect heavy small-craft and racing yacht traffic on summer weekends — stay clear of the regatta course buoys and the car-ferry route between Marstrand and Koon. Sweden's allmansratten covers private use; commercial operators need Transportstyrelsen registration and harbour-authority coordination during the July racing weeks. Water hits 17-19 C by late July; evenings stay light past 22:00 in midsummer.
