Denmark's second city opens onto a wide Kattegat bay with launch zones at Aarhus O and the Aarhus Watersports Complex.
Aarhus Bay sits on Jutland's east coast facing the Kattegat, with the city's redeveloped Aarhus O district and the Aarhus Watersports Complex (AWC) providing the standard launch points. The bay is shallow — 4-12 m over sand and eelgrass close to shore — with very little swell and reliable westerly to northwesterly thermals building each summer afternoon. Cleaner conditions sit on the south shore toward Marselisborg and Ballehage Strand, away from harbour traffic. The Port of Aarhus is one of Denmark's largest cargo terminals and the Mols-Linien high-speed ferry to Sjaellands Odde departs the south basin every 90 minutes — stay well outside the marked fairways and the breakwater entrance. Danish small-craft rules apply (50 m from bathing zones, 200 m from manned beaches). Best months are June through early September, with water reaching 18-20 C in late July.
Westerly to northwesterly 8-14 knots most summer afternoons, sheltered behind the Aarhus O breakwater and clean fetch out across the Kattegat.
