About this spot

Annapolis sits where the Severn River meets Chesapeake Bay, anchored by the US Naval Academy and a network of shallow creeks (Spa, Back, Whitehall) that act as natural beginner zones. Launch from Sandy Point State Park north of town for direct bay access, or from Truxtun Park on Spa Creek for sheltered conditions. Summer afternoons reliably build a SE-S sea breeze of 10-15 knots that creates 1-2ft chop on the open bay but leaves the creeks glassy until mid-afternoon. Tidal flow is gentle — under 1.5 knots even at peak ebb — but pushes a real direction you can use for downwinders from Sandy Point south to the Bay Bridge piers. Maryland DNR and USCG share enforcement; the practical rules are the standard 6-knot wake zone within 100ft of shore or moored vessels, and a strict no-go around the Naval Academy seawall and Hospital Point during academy events. Watch for Bay Bridge tunnel traffic and skipjack/workboat lines off Eastport.

Typical conditions

Brackish bay with mild 0.5-1.5 knot tidal current, afternoon SE-S sea breezes 10-15 knots in summer, water 75-85F June-September. Glass-off mornings and steady afternoon thermals.
