About this spot

Sag Harbor sits at the inner elbow of Long Island's twin forks, on the protected waters of Shelter Island Sound and Noyack Bay. The geography blocks open Atlantic swell while still funneling the prevailing southwest summer sea breeze across the bay — a combination that makes the water reliably rideable without being intimidating. From Memorial Day through mid-September, a southwesterly sea breeze fills in most afternoons at 10–15 knots and holds until evening. Mornings are typically glassy. Launch options include Long Beach (Noyack), Havens Beach in the village, and several town-permit ramps; nearby Three Mile Harbor and Northwest Harbor offer flat alternatives in stronger breeze. Water is cold most of the year — full wetsuits through May and again from October. Best window is July through early September when surface temperatures climb into the upper 60s and low 70s. Fall brings strong NW frontal winds and shorter days but the water stays warm into late October. Powerboat traffic is heavy on summer weekends in the harbor mouth.
