Newport sits where Narragansett Bay opens to the Atlantic, a geography that has made it the de facto sailing capital of the United States for over a century — host city of the America's Cup from 1930 to 1983. The same southwest sea breeze that built that reputation fills in nearly every summer afternoon at 12–18 knots, often holding past sunset. The East Passage between Newport and Jamestown gives long open fetches with manageable chop; the more sheltered bays inside (Mount Hope, Sakonnet River, the back side of Aquidneck) offer flatter alternatives. Common launches are Fort Adams State Park, King Park, Third Beach (Middletown), and Sachuest Point. Mornings are often calm; the breeze builds late morning and peaks mid-afternoon. Water is cold — into the upper 30s in winter and rarely above 72 °F in August. Wetsuits are standard year-round. Fall brings clean NW frontal winds, beautiful conditions but shorter days and stinging air temps. Heavy yacht and ferry traffic in Newport Harbor itself; foilers should stay clear of the harbor entrance and the Newport Bridge channel.
