About this spot

Boston Harbor is a deeply indented estuary protected from open Atlantic swell by the 34 Boston Harbor Islands. The result inside the islands is mostly flat water even when it is breezy outside — a combination of urban access, sheltered conditions, and a backdrop of the downtown skyline that makes for a distinctive eFoil experience. A southwest sea breeze fills in most summer afternoons at 10–15 knots, building from glassy mornings. Common launches include Pleasure Bay in South Boston (very flat), Constitution Beach in East Boston, Quincy's Wollaston Beach, and the public ramp at Hingham. The outer harbor and Massachusetts Bay see more swell and stronger wind, particularly when the breeze swings northeasterly. Water is cold — high 30s in winter, rarely above 68 °F in late summer. A 4/3 wetsuit is standard most of the year. Heavy commercial traffic moves through the main shipping channel between Castle Island and Deer Island; foilers should stay clear of the channel and the Logan Airport approach corridor north of the harbor. Fall coastal storms can make the outer harbor genuinely dangerous.

Typical conditions

Sheltered by the Harbor Islands; SW summer sea breeze 10–15 kt afternoons; water 36 °F winter to 68 °F August; NE coastal storms in fall/winter.
