Lake Argyle

WA's hidden inland sea — Australia's largest reservoir in the remote Kimberley.

About this spot

Lake Argyle is a man-made reservoir on the Ord River in the East Kimberley, and at full capacity it holds roughly 18 times the water of Sydney Harbour, making it one of the largest artificial lakes in the southern hemisphere. The lake spreads across 1,000+ square kilometres of red-rock ranges, with hundreds of islands and inlets to explore. For eFoilers willing to make the journey, it's one of Australia's most spectacular and least-crowded venues. The dry season from April to October is the operating window: warm 25–30 °C water, stable E trade winds at 10–18 kt, and clear skies. Wet-season access (November–March) is limited by heat, storms and crocodile activity — Lake Argyle is freshwater-croc territory year-round, and saltwater-croc presence has been recorded; local knowledge is essential. The Lake Argyle Resort provides the only realistic basing point. WA powered-vessel rules apply as on the coast. This is genuinely remote terrain — the nearest town, Kununurra, is 70 km away — so self-sufficiency, support craft and trip planning are non-negotiable. The reward is foiling across vast empty water under the Kimberley sky.

Typical conditions

Vast remote inland reservoir; dry season Apr–Oct E trade winds 10–18 kt; warm 25–30 °C water; flat to light chop.
