About this spot

Cairns sits on Trinity Bay where the Coral Sea meets the mouth of Trinity Inlet, with Cape Grafton sheltering the southern aspect. The Esplanade Lagoon is the postcard but you launch from the Yorkeys Knob boat ramp 15 minutes north, or the Cairns Marlin Marina if you have a tender. Inside Trinity Inlet the water stays flat in anything under 20 knots — it's a working channel for reef boats so traffic is moderate but predictable, with a marked main channel. The sweet spot is the Australian winter, May through October, when the SE trade winds hold 12-18 knots and afternoon glass returns by sunset. Summer (December-March) is the wet season with cyclones, monsoonal westerlies, and most importantly box jellyfish (Irukandji and Chironex) requiring full-body stinger suits in any open water. Maritime Safety Queensland enforces a 6-knot rule within 30m of any other vessel, person, or fixed structure, and within Trinity Inlet the speed limit is 6 knots inside marked zones near the marina and ferry terminal. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park begins at the bay's outer edge — eFoils are permitted in General Use Zones (the lagoonal waters off Cairns qualify), but Marine National Park (green) zones around Green Island and Michaelmas Cay prohibit motorised craft, so check the GBRMPA zoning map before heading out to the reef.

Typical conditions

Tropical lagoonal water with morning calm, building SE trades 12-20 knots most afternoons May-October. Water 24-29 C year-round but stinger season November-May requires lycra.
