Where the Atlantic meets the Indian — Bloubergstrand glass mornings, False Bay shelter, and the Cape Doctor in the afternoon.
Cape Town sits at the confluence of two oceans: the cold, Atlantic-fed west coast at Bloubergstrand and Camps Bay, and the warmer, Indian-influenced east coast at False Bay. The wind story is built around the Cape Doctor — a south-easterly trade wind that blows down the lee of Table Mountain from late November through March, regularly 20–40 knots in the afternoon. Mornings are typically glass on both coasts, and that early window is the rider's friend; by mid-morning the Cape Doctor begins to fill in and the bay surfaces firm up into clean side-shore conditions for foiling. The two coasts read very differently. Bloubergstrand, 25 km north of the CBD, faces the Atlantic with the Table Mountain backdrop and is the iconic side-shore Cape Doctor venue — long sand-bottom launches, exposed water beyond the inshore strip, and a cluster of kite and wing schools that have added eFoil rentals (Cape Town eFoil School operates here and at Hout Bay). False Bay's Muizenberg and Strand stretches sit on the eastern side of the peninsula in the wind shadow of the mountains and the warmer Agulhas current; the water is several degrees warmer, the swell smaller, and beginners typically learn here. Hout Bay's small protected harbour is the third option — sheltered from both regimes, suitable when the Cape Doctor over-delivers north and a south swell is hammering False Bay. Constraints to plan around: SAMSA classifies eFoils as small powered recreational vessels and a Category R skipper's licence is generally expected; Table Mountain National Park's marine-protected zones cover stretches of both coasts and exclude motorised craft from sanctuary areas; municipal by-laws define swimmer corridors and 100-metre low-speed zones at the bathing beaches. Great White presence in False Bay is meaningfully reduced from a decade ago thanks to orca activity, but it has not disappeared — locals still respect dawn and dusk patterns and the seasonal Shark Spotters flag system. Best foiling months are October–April for the Atlantic side and the warmer Cape Doctor sessions; May–September trades wind for swell and cold but delivers some of the cleanest, emptiest mornings of the year on False Bay.
