Walker Bay (Hermanus)

Walker Bay stretches from Hermanus in the north around to Gansbaai in the south, an open south-facing curve of Atlantic coastline that gets steady SE trade wind through the late spring and summer months. The launch zones for foiling are Onrus, Grotto Beach, and the more sheltered corner at New Harbour. Mornings are typically glass; the SE fills in from late morning and can easily push 25 knots by mid-afternoon. This is real ocean — open swell, kelp beds offshore, and a noticeably colder water column than Knysna or even Langebaan. The non-negotiable detail: Walker Bay is the most important southern right whale calving ground on the South African coast, and from approximately June through November the bay fills with mothers and calves. South African regulation prohibits motorized craft (including eFoils) from approaching closer than 300 meters to any whale, and Hermanus authorities take this seriously — Marine Protected Area sections of the bay are closed to motorized water sports during peak whale months. Plan eFoil trips for December through April. Sub-15 kW eFoils remain exempt from SAMSA motor-vessel registration, but the Marine Living Resources Act and the whale-protection regulations apply in full. Great white sharks transit Walker Bay; the shark-cage operators at Gansbaai exist for a reason.
