Langebaan Lagoon

Langebaan is the spot every Cape Town foiler heads to when the False Bay swell turns ugly or the Atlantic side gets too cold to enjoy. The lagoon sits inside the West Coast National Park, stretching roughly 17 km from the town of Langebaan down to Geelbek, and the mid-section around Shark Bay and Kraalbaai is bathtub-flat with a hard sand bottom and depths from knee-high to 4 meters. The southerly summer wind — the same Cape Doctor that hammers Cape Town from October to March — arrives here with less gusting and side-shore-to-onshore orientation, making it a friendlier eFoil canvas than the open ocean stretches around Bloubergstrand. There is real regulatory texture to the lagoon. The southern third sits inside a Marine Protected Area zoned for non-motorized use only, so eFoilers must stay north of the buoy line near Kraalbaai/Preekstoel. SANParks rangers actively patrol. The northern lagoon (the launch zones at Main Beach, Shark Bay, and the Mykonos side) is open to motorized watercraft, and eFoils at typical sub-15 kW power are exempt from SAMSA registration but still fall under the Marine Living Resources Act for general conduct. Several established kite and wing schools — Cape Sport Centre is the anchor — handle eFoil rentals and lessons with launch from Main Beach. Shark risk is effectively zero in the lagoon — it's too shallow and brackish for the great whites that work the False Bay coast on the other side of the peninsula. Stingrays in the shallow sand sections are the main wildlife consideration; a shuffle-step entry handles it. Best months are November to March for wind consistency and warmer water; April-September brings calmer days and cleaner glass for early-morning sessions, but cold (a 4/3 wetsuit is essential). Tides matter: the lagoon empties significantly on a spring low, so plan around mid-to-high water for the southern stretches.
