Knysna Lagoon is the calm counterpoint to South Africa's wind-driven foil spots. The lagoon sits behind two dramatic sandstone headlands — the Knysna Heads — that filter ocean swell and produce a wide, mostly glass-flat estuary backed by indigenous forest. The main launch options are Thesen Islands, the Waterfront, and Leisure Isle, all with easy beach or jetty entries and minimal current away from the Heads channel itself. This is a beginner-to-intermediate eFoil environment, not a high-performance spot — wind is light and inconsistent, but the sheltered water and forgiving conditions make it genuinely pleasant for learning or for cruising. The lagoon falls within the Knysna section of the Garden Route National Park, and the central channel near the Heads has strong tidal flow plus a regulated marine reserve zone — eFoilers should stay clear of the Heads themselves and the Featherbed Reserve side. Sub-15 kW eFoils are exempt from SAMSA motorized-craft registration, and the Marine Living Resources Act applies to conduct around oyster beds and seagrass. Rentals and lessons are limited compared to Langebaan, so visitors usually arrange BYO logistics with one of the Waterfront paddle/SUP operators. Best months are October through April for warmer water and longer daylight; the lagoon is rideable year-round with a 3/2 wetsuit.
