Sheltered Costa Brava bay opposite the Medes Islands marine reserve, with clean afternoon sea breezes and protected launch beaches.

L'Estartit sits on the Costa Brava at the foot of the Montgrí massif, with the limestone bulk of the mountain to the north blocking the worst of the Tramontana — the cold, violent northerly that defines this stretch of Catalan coast — and the seven islets of the Illes Medes archipelago lying about 1 km offshore. The Medes are a strict marine reserve (Parc Natural del Montgrí) and one of the western Mediterranean's best-known dive sites; the channel between the islands and the mainland is a no-anchor zone with a 5-knot speed limit for motorised craft, which directly affects eFoil routing. The town's main beach, Platja Gran, is a 2 km sandy crescent running south toward the mouth of the Ter river — the standard launch zone, with rental concessions and a designated watercraft corridor through the swim area. Wind pattern is split. In summer (May–September), morning glass gives way to the Garbí — the southwesterly afternoon sea breeze — building to 10–15 knots and producing clean cross-shore conditions on Platja Gran. In spring and autumn the Tramontana is the dominant force: when it blows hard from the north, the bay is partially in the wind shadow of Montgrí but the upper end near the Medes channel sees gusty offshore squalls and chop — not a beginner condition. The river-mouth area south of the main beach has fresh-water plumes after rain and shifting sandbars; stay north of the river spit. Best months: May–October. June and September are optimal — warm water (around 22–24 °C), reliable Garbí, no Tramontana risk. Stay clear of the marine reserve buoys around the Medes; transit at low speed only and never land on the islets (protected nesting sites).
