The most consistently windy stretch of inland water in North America — reliable 25–35 kt afternoons from April through October.

The Columbia River Gorge between Hood River, Oregon and White Salmon, Washington is the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Range, and it acts as a giant thermal funnel: hot dry air over eastern Oregon rises, cool marine air from the Pacific rushes in to replace it, and the only path is straight through the Gorge. The result is some of the most reliable strong wind on Earth — 25–35 knots most summer afternoons from April through October, often holding well past sunset. The wind blows westerly (upstream) while the river flows eastward at 2–4 knots, producing steep stand-up swell that defined modern windsurfing in the 1980s. Hood River is the historic capital — the Event Site, the Hook, and Waterfront Park are the main launches, with rental shops, board builders, and foiling-specific instruction concentrated within a few blocks. Across the river, the White Salmon and Swell City sites favor different wind angles. Water is genuinely cold (50s-low 60s) even in August; full wetsuits are standard. Mornings are typically light, perfect for downwind foiling and learners, with the Gorge wind filling in by late morning and peaking mid-afternoon. Beyond mid-October the wind shuts off and rain takes over until spring.
Legendary thermal funnel; westerly Gorge wind 20–35 kt most summer afternoons; strong river current west to east; cold water 50–65 °F.
