About this spot

Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada border in the Sierra Nevada at an elevation of 6,225 feet. It is the largest alpine lake in North America by volume, famously transparent (visibility regularly exceeds 70 feet), and ringed by granite peaks. From late June through early September the surface is glass at sunrise, then the Washoe Zephyr — a thermal southwesterly drawn over the Sierra crest by the heating Great Basin — fills in around 1–2pm at 12–20 knots and shuts down by evening. Water warms slowly: 50 °F in early June, 60–68 °F by late July in the shallower bays. East-shore launches at Sand Harbor (Nevada side) and Kings Beach, and west-side spots like Meeks Bay and Tahoe City, all offer beach put-ins and unobstructed open water. The thin air at altitude reduces battery efficiency by roughly 5–10 percent, so plan ranges accordingly. The California portion of the lake requires DMV registration of the eFoil as a motorized vessel and a California Boater Card for operators 16 and older; the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency also enforces aquatic-invasive-species inspections on craft entering the lake from out of basin.

Typical conditions

Glassy alpine mornings, afternoon Washoe Zephyr 12–20 kt from SW; water 50–68 °F July–Sep; elevation 6,225 ft so output drops slightly.
