Cold, windy, current-swept water beneath the Golden Gate — a serious arena for confident foilers comfortable with chop and tide.
The central San Francisco Bay is one of the most aggressive flat-ish water playgrounds on the US West Coast. As the Central Valley heats up each afternoon, marine air is drawn through the Golden Gate, accelerating into a 20–30 knot westerly thermal that hammers Crissy Field and the western shore of Treasure Island from roughly noon until sunset, May through September. Tidal currents through the Gate routinely run 3–5 knots and stack against the wind to build short, steep wind-chop. Water stays between 52–60 °F year round, so a 4/3 hooded wetsuit is standard. Crissy Field has a long sandy beach launch with a parking lot at the East Beach, and Clipper Cove on the lee side of Treasure Island offers a far more sheltered alternative when the West Bay is overpowered. The Bay's wing-foiling and kiteboarding scene is mature and the same launches are eFoil-friendly. This is not a learner zone: shipping lanes, ferry traffic, seals, kelp, and the cold itself all demand experience. California DMV registration of the eFoil and a California Boater Card are required, and riders should monitor the Coast Guard's restricted zones around the bridge piers and Alcatraz.
