Lake Washington stretches 22 miles along the eastern edge of Seattle, separating the city from Bellevue and Kirkland. At over 200 feet deep and largely shielded from Pacific storms by the Olympic Peninsula, it stays relatively calm — ideal for cruising and learning. The lake is freshwater, cold most of the year, and warms into the upper 60s and low 70s by late July. Glassy mornings are common. A light southerly thermal often fills in on warm summer afternoons, rarely exceeding 12–15 knots. Popular launch spots include Magnuson Park, Gene Coulon Park in Renton, Newcastle Beach, and Kirkland's Marina Park. The lake is bridged by the I-90 and SR-520 floating bridges — both have channels foilers should give wide berth. Wetsuits are essential from October through June; even in midsummer the deep water stays cold. There are no manatees here, but boat traffic from float-plane traffic at Kenmore Air Harbor and the cross-lake ferry routes warrants attention. Best months are late June through early September.
