Tropical island at the end of the Florida Keys with year-round warm water, easterly trades, and protected reef flats on both sides.
Key West sits at the southern terminus of US Highway 1, surrounded by the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. The water is shallow, gin-clear, and warm twelve months a year — winter lows hover in the low 70s, summer highs in the mid-80s. The Atlantic side faces open ocean and the reef line about six miles offshore; the Gulf side opens onto endless protected flats. ESE trade winds dominate from late fall through spring, blowing 10–18 knots most afternoons. Summer brings lighter, more variable conditions and afternoon thunderstorms but glass-calm mornings ideal for long foil cruises out toward the Marquesas or the wreck of the USS Vandenberg. Operators run rentals and lessons out of Stock Island and the Key West Bight. Much of the surrounding water falls inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, with no-motor zones over seagrass beds and coral. Manatee zones apply in the canals and Garrison Bight. Hurricane season June through November is the only meaningful hazard window.
