Lake Champlain stretches 120 miles between Vermont's Green Mountains and New York's Adirondacks, with Burlington serving as the practical hub. The lake is wide enough (up to 12 miles) to develop real wind and chop, but the shoreline is dotted with sheltered bays — Mallets Bay, Shelburne Bay, and Malletts Bay on the Vermont side; Willsboro Bay and Westport on the New York side — that hold flat water in everything but a hard W or NW. Summer afternoons build a reliable S-SW thermal of 10-15 knots, while mornings deliver classic glass-off conditions for sunrise sessions with the Adirondacks lit pink across the water. The season is short and intense: late June through early September is when water temps hit the 70s and the lake is genuinely warm-water foilable, with shoulder months requiring full wetsuits. Vermont State Police and NY State Parks Police share patrol duties; standard rules apply (no wake within 200ft of shore or moored vessels in Vermont, 100ft in New York), and the lake's well-marked aids to navigation make orientation straightforward. Watch for the Burlington-Port Kent ferry crossing if foiling out from Burlington Harbor.
