Dun Laoghaire Harbour, 12 km south of Dublin city, is enclosed by two granite piers built between 1817 and 1842 and offers the largest sheltered watersport venue on Ireland's east coast. The 250-acre inner harbour stays flat in any wind, with depths of 4-8 m over a mud and sand bottom. Pure Magic Watersports operates verified wing-foil and hydrofoil sessions from the INSS (Irish National Sailing School) base on the West Pier. Watch for the four resident yacht clubs' Tuesday and Thursday evening racing fleets on summer evenings, plus the high-speed Stena Line catamaran route that previously ran from the harbour (now suspended). Outside the piers, Scotsman's Bay and the open Dublin Bay are exposed to Irish Sea chop and shipping into Dublin Port — riding outside the harbour is generally for advanced riders only. Water hits 14-16 C in July and August; a 4/3 wetsuit covers most of the season.
