Falmouth fronts Carrick Roads, the third-deepest natural harbour in the world, formed by a flooded river valley running 6 km inland from the open sea. Carrick Roads stays flat in winds up to 20 knots from any westerly direction, with depths of 8-30 m and very little swell penetration past Pendennis Point. Outside the harbour, Falmouth Bay and Gyllyngvase Beach offer cleaner Atlantic-influenced winds and small to moderate swell for more advanced riders. Falmouth Harbour Commissioners regulate the inner waters and require all powered watercraft to keep 6 knots inside the harbour and 100 m clear of swimmers at the popular bathing beaches (Gyllyngvase, Swanpool, Castle Beach) during summer season. The Falmouth-St Mawes ferry, the Flushing ferry, and frequent commercial tug movements demand awareness — stay outside the marked fairways. E-Foil Cornwall operates a verified school in the area. Water reaches 16-18 C in August, and the South West coastal microclimate gives the longest usable season in the UK from late April through October.
