About this spot

The Solent sits between the south coast of England and the Isle of Wight, with Hayling Island, Chichester Harbour and Langstone Harbour forming the eastern Solent's main watersport zones. The double-tide phenomenon — caused by the Isle of Wight splitting tidal flows — gives four high waters daily and exceptional flexibility for tide-sensitive launches. Hayling Island's south shore is the UK's windsurf and kite capital, and the same sea-breeze patterns drive consistent eFoil conditions from May through October. Inside Chichester Harbour the water is shallow (2-6 m over mud and eelgrass) and almost always flat regardless of wind, while the open Solent off Hayling sees 0.5-1.5 m wind chop and faster tidal streams (up to 3 knots in the main channels). Bottom is sand and shingle on the open coast, mud and eelgrass inside the harbours. The Queen's Harbour Master Portsmouth (QHM Portsmouth) regulates the central Solent and enforces a strict 10-knot speed limit inside the Small Boat Channel north of Ryde, plus exclusion zones around Royal Navy movements. Commercial cross-Solent ferry traffic (Wightlink, Red Funnel, Hovertravel) is dense — never cross marked fairways without checking AIS. Chichester Harbour Conservancy regulates the eastern harbour with a 8-knot speed limit in most channels and bird-protection zones at Pilsey Island and East Head — eFoils must stay clear of these zones from October to March. The Hayling Ferry crossing between Eastney and Hayling Island runs every 15 minutes in summer. Most operators launch from West Wittering, the Hayling Island Sailing Club beach, or the public slipway at Northney Marina. Water reaches 17-19 C in August, and a 3/2 wetsuit handles April through October.

Typical conditions

Reliable southwesterlies 10-20 knots year-round, with double tides giving four high-water windows daily and flat water inside Chichester Harbour at most states.
