Kihei

Maui's south-shore beginner standard — leeward, dry, and the densest concentration of foil schools on the island.

About this spot

Kihei runs for roughly six miles along the south-west coast of Maui in the deep rain shadow of Haleakalā, which is what gives this stretch its dry, sunny, and consistently leeward character. Trade winds blowing from the NE spill down the volcano's flanks and largely miss the Kihei coastline in the morning, leaving a long window of glassy water before the daily thermal sea breeze fills in mid-to-late morning. Kama'ole Beach Parks I, II, and III are the standard launch points, with sand-bottom entries and deep water within a few hundred meters of the shoreline. The geography makes Kihei the densest concentration of eFoil schools and rentals on Maui — predictable conditions, easy access, and long shoulder windows on either side of the thermal cycle. The critical local context is humpback whale season, roughly mid-December through mid-April, when the Au'au Channel between Maui, Lanai, and Kaho'olawe holds one of the highest densities of humpbacks on Earth. Federal rules require staying at least 100 yards from any whale, and the rule is taken seriously here. Plan sessions accordingly.

Typical conditions

South Maui leeward coast in the rain shadow of Haleakalā; glassy dawn, predictable midday onshore sea breeze; humpback season Dec–Apr requires distance.
