About this spot

Kailua Beach is the flatwater beginner standard on Oahu. The bay sits on the windward side of the island, sheltered by an outer reef that knocks down ocean swell before it reaches the inside, leaving a long stretch of turquoise sand-bottom water that runs from Kailua Beach Park south through Lanikai. The two small Mokulua Islands (the Mokes) sit roughly a mile offshore and are the visual reference point for any session here. Conditions are driven by the NE trade winds, which blow most reliably from April through September. eFoil riders typically launch off the sand at Kailua Beach Park or the Lanikai end and stay inside the reef where the water is clean, shallow, and forgiving. The Mokes themselves are a state seabird sanctuary — landing on Moku Iki is prohibited and Moku Nui has restricted zones. Practical notes: Kailua has commercial watercraft restrictions in the bay, residential parking is tight and patrolled, and the area is busy with kayakers, kiters, and swimmers. It remains one of the best places on the planet to learn — but treat it as a shared, regulated waterway rather than an empty playground.

Typical conditions

Windward Oahu lagoon-style flatwater protected by an outer reef; consistent NE trades 10–20 kt Apr–Sep; turquoise sand-bottom shallows toward the Mokes.
