About this spot

Po'ipū sits on Kauai's south shore in the rain shadow of the island's interior peaks, which is why it carries the reputation as the sunniest, driest stretch of coastline on Kauai. For foilers that translates to a reliable launch option when Hanalei is socked in by winter swell or trade-wind rain on the north and east shores. The coast here is a series of small bays and pocket beaches separated by lava reef — Po'ipū Beach Park, Brennecke's, and Shipwreck Beach are the recognizable landmarks. Winter (roughly November–March) is paradoxically the calmer season for south-shore foiling: the dominant NE trades blow offshore, mornings glass off, and the big winter swell that hammers the north stays north. Summer brings south swell wrapping up from the South Pacific, plus stronger afternoon onshore flow, so dawn patrol becomes the play. Water is generally deep just off the sand, but lava reef shelves are unforgiving — scout the launch in person. Po'ipū sees regular monk seal haul-outs on the beaches; the standard 50-foot distance rule applies and is enforced.

Typical conditions

South-facing leeward coast; calmest in winter when NE trades blow offshore; summer brings moderate south swell and warmer afternoon onshores.
