Hanalei Bay is a two-mile crescent on Kauai's north shore, framed by the green ridges of the Na Pali foothills and anchored at its eastern end by the historic Hanalei Pier. From roughly April through September the bay sits in the lee of the prevailing NE trade winds, producing the long stretches of glassy water that have made it one of the most photographed riding venues in the Pacific. The geography matters: the bay opens north, so winter NW swell wraps in hard from October through March, and Hanalei is well known as a big-wave surf venue during those months. eFoil sessions are firmly a summer-shoulder activity here, typically launched from the river mouth or off Black Pot Beach Park near the pier where the water is deepest and cleanest. Reef sits close inshore toward Makua (Tunnels) at the western end — give it room. Local context is non-negotiable on Kauai's north shore. Hanalei has tight parking, sensitive monk seal and sea turtle activity, and ongoing community sensitivity around motorized watercraft following years of access debate. Ride respectfully, launch from sand rather than reef, and check current county rules before showing up with a board.
