Lahaina sits on the leeward west coast of Maui, looking across the Au'au Channel toward Lanai roughly nine miles offshore. The channel is one of the most sheltered stretches of open water in the islands — the West Maui Mountains block the NE trades, Lanai blocks the open Pacific swell from the west, and the result is the glassy morning conditions that have made Lahaina Harbor a watersports hub for decades. The critical context: the August 2023 wildfire devastated historic Lahaina town and the harbor area, killing more than 100 people and destroying much of the waterfront. Rebuild is ongoing, and visitor access patterns have changed significantly. The waters offshore remain ridable and many ocean operations have resumed, but go in informed — verify which launches and operators are active, respect the closures and memorials that remain in place around the impact zone, and book through local Maui-based operators. When conditions and access align, the riding itself is excellent: long flat windows in the channel, humpback presence in winter (federal 100-yard rule applies), and easy north-or-south extensions toward Ka'anapali or Olowalu.
